Materials: 3 ozs worsted weight yarn for adult size mitten

Size 5 needles of your choice for knitting in the round (double points, 2 circs, or 1 long circ for magic loop)

Yarn needle,  12” piece of yarn for stitch holder

 

Cast on 36 sts.  and join in the round being careful not to twist stitches

Work K1, P1 rib for 2.5”

Begin pattern:

Row 1,3: *P3, K1*

Even Rows: Knit

Rows 5,7: P1, *K1, P3* end P2

On row 8,( increase this row only, Knit front and back) of first and last stitch of round

Now begin thumb increases

Row 1 of pattern: K1. Place marker, now work pattern. With one stitch remaining, Place marker and K1

Row 2 of pattern: Knit front and Back of stitch, Slip Marker, Knit around to marker. Slip Marker, K front and back of stitch

Row 3: Knit 2, Slip marker, Work row 3 of pattern , Slip marker, K2

Row 4: K1, Kfb, slip marker, Knit around, Slip marker, Kfb, K1

Continue to work pattern in this way until you have 12 stitches between markers.  Work around the mitten in pattern and place those 12 stitches on a piece of waste yarn.  Closing gap up over thumb, continue to work the mitten in pattern until piece measures 6”.

Opening:  This is the back of the mitten:

Row 1: K2, Bind off 14 sts or  knit across those 14 sts. and place on a yarn holder.  K2, Work pattern on the front of the mitten (18 sts)

Row 2: K2, using the knitted cast on , Cast on 14 sts.  K2, work pattern on front

Row 3-8: K1, P1 for 18 sts, work pattern for 18 sts

Begin working pattern on front and back of mitten until piece measures 8”

Top of mitten decreases:

Row 1:  *K1, Slip 1, K1, PSSO,  K across until 3 sts remain K2 tog, K1*, repeat across

Repeat row 1 until 8 stitches remain on the front of the mitten and 8 on the back. Close top using the kitchener stitch. Weave in ends

Thumb:

Pick up the 12 stitches being held on the waste yarn and 2 sts in the thumb opening. Working in the round knit 1.5 inches. Decreases:

Row 1: K1, K2 tog around

Row 2: Knit

Row 3: K2 tog around.  Break off yarn leaving a 10” tail. Weave through stitches and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Flap:

Pick up 14 st.  along the bound off edge on back of mitten.  Work 6 rows of K1, P1 and bind off in ribbing.  Using the cast on and bind off tail, sew up side seams of flap to the inside of your mitten. Weave in ends and knit your second mitten reversing your flap to the opposite side of the mitten for other hand.
